What is the short answer?

Choose a DIY builder when you need a straightforward site, can prepare the content yourself, and have time to update it. Consider hiring a web designer when your site must explain complex services, support inquiries, integrate with your systems, or give you professional help after launch. Either path can support search visibility when the content, technical setup, and ongoing work are handled well. The difference is often knowing which questions to ask and who will do the work after launch.

This is a comparison of how to build and manage a website. For detailed Maryland project pricing, see our 2026 website cost guide.

How do Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, and a web designer compare?

The subscription price tells you what it costs to access a tool. It does not tell you who will plan the pages, write the copy, check SEO, test inquiries, or help when the business changes.

Important: your domain name, your written content, your account access, and a portable copy of the entire functioning website are different things. Confirm each before committing. GoDaddy offers several products, including Websites + Marketing, Airo AI Builder, and WordPress hosting; their export and customization options are not identical.

When does a DIY website builder make sense?

For a new business that mainly needs a simple reference for referrals, a DIY site may be the right starting point. Wix and Squarespace offer real design and SEO tools; they are not all identical templates. GoDaddy has multiple products, including tools that create sites from AI prompts. The tradeoff becomes clearer when you need a very specific customer journey, uncommon integration, detailed content structure, or more control over how a feature works.

What happens when your needs change?

We often meet owners after they have already built a site and discovered that a new booking flow, custom form, service-area structure, or marketing integration requires more work than expected. Sometimes the builder can do it with the right plan, app, or developer. Other times the practical choice is to rebuild on a different platform.

Are all DIY sites identical?

No. Templates and AI drafts can be customized, and a skilled owner can make an effective site on these platforms. But choosing a layout is not the same as planning original service copy, local proof, accessibility, lead paths, and content that answers your customers' questions.

Does a builder prevent SEO or schema?

No. For example, Wix allows structured data markup, and Squarespace generates some structured data. The real question is whether you know what is appropriate for the page, whether it matches visible content, and whether you can validate it and fix errors within your particular setup.

What about plugins and custom code?

Builder features depend on the platform, plan, and available extensions. Custom code may be possible, but it does not automatically give you access to the platform's underlying hosting or templates. Ask the vendor or developer how the requested feature will be built, maintained, and moved later.

What SEO work is easy to miss when you build a website yourself?

You don't know what you don't know. A template can prompt you for a title and description. It cannot decide whether your service pages answer the right customer questions, whether two pages compete for the same search, or whether a form actually delivered an inquiry. That is the gap between getting a website live and operating it as part of a lead-generation system.

  • Search intent: Which page should answer “website design in Maryland,” and which should explain a website-building choice? We separate service and educational topics so pages support one another.
  • Search Console and indexing: Can Google find the pages that matter? Are important URLs indexed, and do search queries lead to the intended page?
  • Structured data: Does the schema describe what the page actually shows, and does it pass Google's Rich Results Test? A passing test is a check, not a ranking guarantee.
  • Google Business Profile: Is the profile eligible, accurate, and linked to the right website? Are categories, service areas, hours, and ownership set correctly? A website alone does not set up or optimize the profile.
  • Measurement and inquiries: Are GA4 events configured appropriately? Do calls and forms work on a phone, reach the right person, and get a timely reply?
  • Technical care: Are redirects, accessibility, page speed, backups, updates, and connected accounts reviewed as the site changes?

AI can help you draft copy or create an outline, but its output depends on what you tell it. If a prompt never includes your actual services, service area, customer questions, proof, and conversion goals, the draft may sound polished while missing the information a buyer needs. We use AI as a working tool, then apply business context and human review. Google says its generative search features rely on familiar SEO fundamentals; a special llms.txt file or AI-only schema is not required. Read about our AI-first SEO approach.

From our work: With the Wilson T. Ballard Company, we reorganized an established engineering firm's services and projects so visitors could understand its capabilities. For Deep Creek Lake Rentals, the site needs to support direct inquiries alongside ongoing content and marketing. Those are different problems, and neither is solved merely by selecting a template. Do you own your website, and can you take it with you?

You can generally keep or transfer a domain you own. That does not mean you can move a complete website design to a new host. Wix says Wix sites must be hosted on its servers. Squarespace lets you export certain content to a WordPress-compatible file, but styles, many page types, and features are excluded. GoDaddy's newer Airo AI Builder provides code downloads, while its other website products have different migration paths. In practice, a switch from a hosted builder to WordPress or a custom HTML site commonly involves rebuilding layouts, forms, and functionality, even when some text or images can be reused.

Canceling a subscription does not always delete everything immediately. Wix says a canceled paid site can revert to a free Wix address when the term ends. Squarespace says canceling takes the site offline, and deletion is a separate action. The practical risk is losing the live site at your custom domain or discovering that the version you need cannot be moved as a working site. Download and retain the content and assets you are entitled to before you cancel.

With a self-hosted WordPress site, the files and database can generally be migrated to another WordPress-compatible host when you have the necessary account access and licenses. If you hire Maryland Web Design Corporation and later choose another provider, we can help you arrange a handoff. We want clients to understand their domain, hosting, website, and service agreements before they sign. A WordPress site would still need WordPress-compatible hosting and sometimes license or configuration changes; it does not automatically become a Squarespace or Wix site.

What have we experienced with GoDaddy hosting?

We resell GoDaddy products, and we also believe customers deserve clear information about what they are buying. In our own work, a client website hosted through GoDaddy went offline and we were charged approximately $600 to restore it. We disagreed with that charge because we had not identified a site issue that justified it. That is one experience with hosting support, not a claim that every GoDaddy product or customer will have the same outcome.

If GoDaddy hosting, a domain, or email is the right fit for you, we can help you purchase the products you need through us, explain the products and agreed fees, and make sure you know whose name the accounts and domain are in. Any domain registration, hosting, email, website build, or ongoing support should be listed separately in the proposal. You should not have to buy services you do not need to ask us for help.

What do you get from working with a local web design partner?

Many of our clients meet with us monthly to review what is happening and what to do next. We typically offer about 15 minutes of strategy discussion at no additional charge, depending on the engagement. That conversation might identify a missed lead path, a service page that needs clarity, an untested form, a new Google Business Profile issue, or a piece of existing content worth turning into a video or article.

That is our practical difference: you can talk to someone who knows your business and your website, rather than being left to interpret a generic dashboard. The scope of hands-on SEO, content, video, maintenance, hosting, and marketing work is agreed separately. We will tell you when a targeted improvement is more useful than an entirely new website.

What does a DIY website really cost compared with professional design?

A monthly builder fee is only one part of the cost. Account for your time, a domain, paid apps, email, content, photography, booking or payment features, ongoing updates, and the possibility of rebuilding when the platform no longer fits. A professional quote should spell out planning, writing, design, development, search setup, revisions, hosting, and maintenance separately enough that you know what you are buying.

Our Maryland website pricing guide explains our limited projects starting at $1,500 and custom foundation websites starting at $5,500, with the actual scope defined in a proposal. Those are our project starting points, not the prices of the DIY platforms or a promise that every business needs a $5,500 site.

Should you build your own business website?

Ask yourself these five questions before picking a platform:

  1. What must the site accomplish? Is it a basic reference for referrals, or should it support a steady flow of qualified inquiries?
  2. Who will write the pages? Clear answers about services, locations, process, and proof take more effort than choosing a template.
  3. How much time can you commit? Include the time needed after launch for updates, accessibility checks, forms, and measurement.
  4. What must connect? List the actual booking, email, payment, CRM, or reporting tools you need.
  5. What happens if you outgrow it? Ask about content and code exports, account access, domain control, and the work involved in a future migration.

If you already have a DIY site, you may need better content, a simpler contact path, or professional support rather than a full rebuild. We can review what exists before recommending a new website. Explore our Maryland website design services and design process.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix good for a small business?

Yes, when an owner wants a hands-on builder and has time to write, organize, and update the site. Wix has meaningful SEO tools, but a move to another host generally means rebuilding the Wix design.

Is Squarespace good for SEO?

Squarespace supports core SEO tasks and generates some structured data. Competitive visibility still depends on useful content, technical care, and a plan for the questions customers ask.

Is GoDaddy’s AI website builder enough for a service business?

It may be enough for an initial presence. GoDaddy offers several website products with different editing, export, and hosting options, so confirm which product and plan you are choosing.

Does canceling Wix, Squarespace, or GoDaddy delete my website?

Not necessarily. Wix can revert a canceled paid site to a free Wix address; Squarespace cancellation takes the site offline and deletion is separate. Policies and product behavior differ, so back up available content before canceling.

Can I move a DIY website to WordPress later?

Yes, but some or much of the site usually has to be rebuilt. Squarespace can export some content, Wix does not provide a portable complete site, and GoDaddy’s Airo AI Builder can export code. A domain transfer is different from a website migration.

What SEO tasks do small businesses often miss when building a website?

Common omissions include researching search intent, connecting Search Console, checking indexing and schema, configuring analytics and forms, linking an eligible Google Business Profile, and reviewing accessibility, redirects, and mobile usability.

What happens if I stop working with Maryland Web Design Corporation?

For a self-hosted WordPress website, the site files and database can generally be moved to another compatible host with the necessary access and licenses. The contract should identify ownership, account access, and any paid licenses or services.
